Campaigners have persuaded Union delegates in Brighton to vote in favour of a referendum on the proposed new European Union treaty. This will increase pressure on Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Liberal Democrats had called for a referendum on the previous draft constitution.
John remarked: "Parliament should vote on the proposed new European Union treaty. A referendum would unleash as much anti-Government feeling as it would genuine interest in the future of Europe. This treaty is a way of making a union of 27 Member States work - it's not a constitution."
