Europe's Industry Commissioner Gunter Verheugenas said: "There is not now and never will be any requirement to drop imperial measurements."

Whilst John Vincent supports the view that such decisions must be made by Britain at a time and a choosing of Britain he thinks that clinging to an imperial past is just a barrier to trade.

If every road signs would have had to be changed from miles to kilometres it would be a mammoth task but it should be faced one day. "Maybe in 50 years time when all signs are likely to be electronic signs this will no longer be an issue." John noted.
